Welcome To The
Chilliwack Middle School
Hockey Skills Academy

Our Mission:

The CMS Hockey Skills Academy seeks to support young athletes in their pursuit of hockey excellence while maintaining academic success. The goal of the program is to help students reach their individual potential both in the classroom and on the ice. Our hockey instructors will challenge, develop and improve individual skill sets, fitness and sportsmanship in a positive, structured and fun atmosphere.

The CMS Hockey Skills Academy works in partnership with the Chilliwack School District and the Chilliwack Minor Hockey Association. The CMS Hockey Skills Academy supports and delivers the instruction of the Hockey Canada Skills Program. A teacher on the staff of CMS is a member of the CMS Hockey Skills Academy, trained and certified at or above the requirements as established by Hockey Canada for the Skills Program.

The Hockey Canada Skills Academy is an officially licensed program of Hockey Canada. The CMS Hockey Skills Academy has the rights to use this licensed program, which is starting its first year in the Chilliwack School District.

Using the Hockey Canada curriculum as a guide, the course is designed for developing athletes who are interested in gaining knowledge, skills and attitudes that will augment their present participation in hockey. On and off-ice testing and comparisons based on Hockey Canada tests/results are conducted twice a year.

The program is available to any grade 7-9 students in the Chilliwack School District. Students take the Hockey Skills Program in place of their regular Physical Education courses. Usually there are 2 or 3 on-ice sessions per week and the other time is used for strength training, health, first aid, fitness development and other sport games.

Students' class time is divided into on and off-ice components. The on-ice curriculum allows students to work on individual (technical) skills such as skating, passing and receiving, puck handling, shooting, checking and moving through to tactical/game situations implementing these skills through deliberate practice activities. Students are exposed to different training techniques for pre/in/post season workouts. Classroom sessions are spent looking at mental training activities and special guest presentations. There may be a number of field trips as well.

A facility shared use agreement between the City of Chilliwack, Canlan Sports and the Chilliwack School District enables use of ice at Prospera Centre during daytime hours.
